That’s the logic that’s already been applied to ocean creatures like shrimp and trout, which are forced into ever-smaller enclosures to increase profits and given the bare minimum of food and sanitation.

These things can’t be reformed from within the market system. Instead, change has to come from the political sphere, exerting power over the market. Some demands are simply unacceptable. Companies can’t be allowed to flood the market with cheap, bloodstained animal products, pumping up the public’s appetite for things that shouldn’t be produced at all. The consumer must be told “no.” The octopus abattoir must be stopped.
