Our obsession with growth is such that it dissolves time. In the space-time of modern capitalism, there are no hours or years, only euros. In this GDP-ified society, the present is defined by one level of wealth, the past understood as its reduction, and the future as its augmentation. Losing money is stepping backward; getting rich is moving forward. Just like Walt W. Rostow’s phases of development: 38 countries with low GDPs are considered “under-developed,” those experiencing growth are “developing,” and those with the highest GDPs per capita are considered “developed.” Time literally becomes money. Every hour spent with your children, playing chess, educating yourself, voting, etc. carries an economic opportunity cost: how much could I have earned if I had worked instead of letting my factors of production “sit idle”?
